Tips to set up a "batucada"

1st step – Gather a group of women interested on the idea.

2nd step – Look for materials like plastic barrels, cans of kerosene oil or any oil (round or square), cans of powdered milk, cans of aluminum, broomsticks (to make the drum sticks) wire or elastic, electrical tape, nail, drill, spray or other paint, strings, fabric scraps and scissors and anything else that you think can be used to make instruments.

Some instruments we use:
Bass drum:
It provides the downbeat, the bass downbeat of the rhythm.
(large plastic barrels)
Cut open one side of the drum, and wash it well inside.
Drill to holes on the closed side of the drum as showed on the illustration à
Tie a wire around the hole and then pass around the wire the cord or lace (around 1,5m), that will serve as a support for the instrument. This instrument is hold around the shoulder and back.


Tin drum:
(round or square medium sized cans)
Cut holes in both sides of the can (illustration 1)
Pass thought the holes a cord or lace that will serve as a support for the instrument. ( this instrument is hold around the waist)

Rattle:
Cut in half any type of small container (like cans of soda, or plastic cans)
Fill it (not completely) with stones.
Close it with tape.

Drumsticks:
You can use pieces of broomsticks as drumsticks.
To get a more low sound from the bass drum, you can tie around the end of the broomsticks pieces of fabric.

3rd step: think of slogans or chants to sing during the action

4th step: use your creativity to make up songs in the instruments.

Invitation à la solidarité et à la mobilisation des signataires de l’Appel des mouvements sociaux « UniEs pour l’avenir du Québec et du monde »

Le 26 août dernier, dans le cadre du Forum social québécois, l’Assemblée des mouvements sociaux entérinait la résolution d’allumer des feux à la grandeur du Québec le 26 janvier 2008 afin de porter nos revendications sur la place publique. Nous vous invitons donc aujourd’hui à vous mobiliser et à joindre les milliers d’autres organisations à travers le monde qui prévoient eux aussi manifester dans le cadre de la journée d’action lancée par le Forum social mondial.

Dans le contexte actuel, chacune et chacun d’entre nous avons mille et une raisons de nous mobiliser et de manifester notre mécontentement à l’égard de nos dirigeants et nos dirigeantes. À cet effet, nous vous proposons d’interpeller plus particulièrement nos dirigeants et nos dirigeantes à Québec et à Ottawa qui mettent en œuvre le projet néolibéral en multipliant les offensives envers nos droits collectifs, en maintenant une attitude méprisante et dangereuse envers les enjeux environnementaux et en nous entraînant dans une logique militaire agressive et coûteuse.

L’idée générale de la mobilisation est de participer à cette journée en organisant des actions en lien avec vos revendications, ou en rejoignant celles organisées dans votre municipalité ou votre région. Les thèmes généraux avancés, les droits collectifs, l’environnement et la paix, peuvent illustrer le lien entre nos revendications et notre rejet des politiques néolibérales de nos gouvernements. Ainsi, diverses activités peuvent avoir lieu pendant la journée et donner suite à une convergence des personnes mobilisées vers une action commune.

Les formes d’action peuvent être diverses : conférences de presse, actions sur Internet, allumage de feux, utilisation de braseros, manifestations, conférences, événements Réclamons la rue, dépôt de budget participatif, création de contes, communications en direct à travers le Québec et ailleurs dans le monde, etc.

Vous avez été nombreuses et nombreux (près de 180 groupes) à signer —et il n’est pas trop tard pour signer— l’Appel « UniEs pour l’avenir du Québec et du monde ». Nous vous espérons donc tout aussi nombreuses et nombreux à manifester le 26 janvier prochain afin que LA NEIGE BRÛLE…partout au Québec.

Inscrivez-vous à la liste d’envoi pour être tenu au courant de l’avancement de la mobilisation et suivez ce lien pour faire connaître l’action de votre groupe le 26 janvier 2008. Le comité mobilisation veillera à mettre en contact les différents groupes appartenant à une même région. Le site web www.appelsolidaireduquebec.org sera un carrefour de réseautage pour nos actions et revendications.

Feminist “Batucada” –Rythms of Freedom

The 26 January 2008, is the day of global action and mobilization of the World Social Forum. It is proposed the realization of a week of action which will culminate in this day. The movements are free to undertake any kind of action, working its themes and the format. We propose that the National Coordinations think about the main issue concerning the local conjuncture, and as for the action we propose the realization of a worldwide feminist “batucada”.

The feminist “batucada” is a group of activist, feminist, anti-capitalist and anti-racist women that, in Brazil, appears in 2003, as one more instrument on the World Mach of Women struggle. It is part of the actions against the commodification of the women’s body and life. The “batucada” is an irreverent space of permanent organization. Besides being an instrument for political discussion, it is an instrument for visibility of the March’s actions.

The “Batucada” is also an instrument of boldness in the construction of new rhythms, music and “slogans” from women’s daily life and struggles, that portrays them, being in the denunciation of the patriarchal society or in the alternatives women find to build an equal world.

The “Batucada” is a space where women can create and re-create. Besides music and activist rhythms, we show our irreverence and organize debates. To discuss global subjects of the society is an instrument to rebuild our daily life.

When we play, we’re saying we want other practices, and that we don’t accept the music culture- patriarchal and prejudiced- that we hear everyday on the radio, shows, and television, that uses woman as market bait.

The instruments we use are made, mostly of recycled materials, or materials that are part of our daily life. Plastic barrels, kerosene cans, soda or beer cans, broomsticks and plastic bottles are some of them.

Besides the debate and the joy provided by the “batucada”, the rhythms help create concentration, unity and strength in the moments of collective actions. Playing music is a direct form of political action, to take feminism into the streets, expressing our struggles and occupying public space.

We learn to organize ourselves and coordinate our own rhythms in an inclusive manner. Drumming is fun, makes us feel well and elevates our spirits face to adversity.
